What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding uses a machine with a carbide-tipped cutting wheel that spins at high speed and chips the stump down below ground level.

We grind to about 6 to 12 inches deep, sometimes deeper if you are replanting.

The roots stay in the ground. They are dead once the tree is gone and they break down on their own over time.

This is different from full tree removal or stump removal, which pulls the whole root ball out. Removal leaves a big hole.

Grinding leaves a pile of chips and a low spot that fills in as the chips settle. Most people do not need removal. Grinding handles the job in less time, with less mess, and for less money.

How Long Does Stump Grinding Take?

Depends on the stump. A small ornamental tree, maybe 20 to 30 minutes.

A medium cottonwood or maple in an open area, closer to an hour.

Large stumps with wide root flares can run two to three hours.

The grinder itself is not slow. What takes time is setup, positioning, and grinding down the root flare around the edges, which most people do not account for when they estimate size.

Rocky soil slows things down too. Utah has a lot of caliche and rock close to the surface in some areas, and hitting that with a grinder adds time.

If you have multiple stumps, we do them all in one trip. Same day in most cases.

What Happens to the Wood Chips?

You get a pile of shredded wood where the stump was. How deep depends on stump size.

A medium stump leaves roughly a wheelbarrow’s worth.

You have options. Leave them in place and they will compact down and decompose over a season or two.

Rake them into garden beds and they work as mulch, which holds moisture and breaks down into the soil over time.

Or we haul them off for an added fee if you want the area clean.

One thing to know: fresh wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they decompose.

If you are spreading them over a lawn area you plan to reseed, mix in some fertilizer or wait until they break down more.

We also sell wood chip mulch by the yard if you need more material for a larger project.

Do I Need a Permit to Grind a Stump in Utah?

Usually no. The tree is already down. Grinding is not a removal, so most cities do not require a permit for it.

Salt Lake County and most surrounding cities do not have a stump grinding permit requirement.

The one situation where you want to double-check: if your original tree removal required a city permit, sometimes because it was in the right of way or near a utility easement, confirm with your city that grinding is covered or does not require a separate step.

Salt Lake City is the most common place where this comes up.

The Salt Lake City tree removal permit guide lays out exactly when permits apply.

If you are outside Salt Lake City, call your city office. It is usually a two-minute conversation.

What’s the Cost of Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding in Salt Lake County runs $150 to $950+ for most residential jobs.

The main factor in in grinding pricing is the tree’s diameter, and note that we measure at ground level, not the trunk.

A small ornamental stump and a mature cottonwood are completely different jobs, and the price reflects that.

Access matters too. A stump in an open backyard is straightforward. One wedged against a fence, on a slope, or in rocky Utah soil takes longer.

The table below gives you typical ranges by size. All estimates are free!  We come out, measure the stump, check the site, and give you an exact number before anything starts.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How much does stump grinding cost in Salt Lake City?

Most residential stumps in Salt Lake County run $150 to $400. Small ornamental stumps — think flowering pear or ornamental cherry — typically come in at $150 to $250. Medium stumps from maples, elms, and similar shade trees run $250 to $400. Large cottonwoods and mature oaks can reach $450 to $950 or more depending on diameter and root spread. We measure the stump on-site and give you an exact price before any work starts. The estimate is free.

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding cuts the stump down 6 to 12 inches below ground level using a rotating cutting wheel. The roots stay in the ground and break down on their own over time. Stump removal pulls the entire root ball out of the ground, which leaves a large hole and requires significantly more labor and equipment. For most homeowners, grinding is the right call — it handles the problem faster, costs less, and leaves the yard easier to deal with afterward. Removal makes sense in specific situations, such as when you are putting in a foundation or need the root system completely gone.

Will stump grinding kill the roots?

Once the tree is cut down, the roots are already dead or dying — they have no way to draw water or nutrients without the trunk and canopy. Grinding the stump down below grade removes the source. The remaining roots break down naturally in the soil over one to several years depending on tree species and soil conditions. If you are concerned about root sprouts from a particular species, we can discuss chemical treatment options when we come out for the estimate.

Can you plant grass or a new tree where the stump was ground?

Yes, but give it some time first. The wood chips left after grinding need to settle and start breaking down before the area is ready to reseed. Raking the chips out and mixing in some topsoil speeds this up. For grass, wait a few weeks and add fertilizer — fresh wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they decompose, which competes with new grass seed. For a new tree, request deep grinding when we quote the job. Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches down. Deep grinding goes further and clears more of the root zone for a clean planting spot.

Can you grind a stump next to a fence or foundation?

In most cases, yes. Our equipment can work in tighter spaces than people expect. That said, stumps directly against a concrete foundation or buried under a deck require a closer look before we commit to a price. We assess access during the free estimate visit. If the stump is within a few inches of a structure, we will tell you exactly what we can do and what the limitations are. We do not quote jobs blind on the phone when access is a real variable.

How deep do you grind the stump?

Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below grade. That is deep enough for the area to be sodded, seeded, or landscaped over. If you are planting a new tree in the same spot, let us know when you call — we will quote deep grinding, which goes further down and clears more of the root zone. Rocky or caliche-heavy soil can limit depth in some cases, but we will tell you upfront if that is a factor on your property.

How soon can you schedule stump grinding in Salt Lake County?

Same-week scheduling is available for most of Salt Lake County. Demand picks up in spring and after major storms, which can push lead times to one to two weeks during those periods. If you have a time-sensitive situation (a contractor coming, a landscaping project waiting) mention it when you call and we will do our best to work around your schedule. Call (801) 262-1596 or fill out the contact form and we will get back to you the same business day.
